REAL ID will soon be REQUIRED for domestic travel

You may have heard about the star in the corner of new driver's licenses.

Starting October 1, 2021, you must have a REAL ID compliant driver license/ID to fly within the U.S.,
unless you use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification.

UNTIL THAT DATE, a Standard New Jersey driver license is valid for air travel within the U.S.

How do I renew my driver's license or vehicle inspection?

The following documents, if expiring between Mar 1 and May 31, have been extended to September 30.
If expiring between June 1 and August 31, they have been extended to December 31.
  • All standard driver licenses (including permits)
  • Standard non-driver IDs
  • Vehicle registrations
  • Inspections
  • Temporary tags

See https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/.
There are extremely long lines at the motor vehicle office.

My personal experience at the Rahway Office on August 21, 2020:
  • Bring your cellphone!
  • Bring your Social Security card.
LAMINATED Social Security Cards are NOT ACCEPTED for REAL ID!
  • and, of course, all required documents
  • Arrive at 7 AM and wait on line for the office to open at 8 AM.
This line will be LONG! It wrapped around the building TWICE!
I waited 2 hours just to get my "e-ticket" to wait AGAIN!
  • They'll ask for your cellphone number.
  • You'll get the FIRST text immediately to confirm you are in the system
    with your ticket number.
Wait in your car or run errands near the DMV office.
  • You'll get a SECOND text around 30 minutes before your turn
"We are almost ready, please make your way back ..."
  • You'll get a THIRD text "Almost your turn".
I was allowed to enter the office and wait on line to start the process.
  • You'll get a FOURTH text "IT'S YOUR TURN"
Proceed to the "ID check" clerk specificed to start the paperwork.
  • Once the paperwork is reviewed,
proceed to your assigned booth for the rest.
Credit cards are accepted for payment.
